The prolonged hot weather and high humidity have resulted in unusually high daytime temperatures and unusually warm nights. A new UK temperature record for June has grabbed the headlines, but hundreds of individual weather stations have also broken their own June temperature records.

Wales has also experienced exceptional heat, with Cardiff Butte Park recording 35.9°C on 25 June, breaking the previous June record of 33.7°C set in 2000.

In Northern Ireland, June records remained unbroken, with 30.8°C recorded at Castlederg on 25 June, matching the long-standing record set at Knockarevan in 1976.

Meanwhile, Scotland held on to its previous record for highest temperatures in June, with no new records set during this heat wave.

These temperatures highlight just how intense the late June heat has become, particularly across England and Wales, with temperatures reaching the mid-30s Celsius during the peak of the incident.

The heat wave, along with the heat during the day, resulted in very high overnight temperatures. These are often called ‘tropical nights’ and temperatures remain above 20°C.

England and Wales recorded an overnight temperature of 23.5°C at Bute Park in Cardiff on June 25, surpassing the previous record of 20.0°C set in 2023.

The UK also recorded a new record minimum June temperature of 23.2°C, observed in Hastings on 26 June, beating the previous record of 22.7°C set in 1976.

Northern Ireland also experienced a new record low, with 19.1°C observed in Murlough on 26 June, exceeding the previous record of 18.2°C set in 2025.

However, in Scotland the existing record lowest June temperature was not surpassed during the event.

These higher nighttime temperatures have contributed to periods of persistent heat stress, especially in urban areas where temperatures remain high overnight.
