Pope Leo Visits U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See for July 4

Commemorating July 4 which marks the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America, Pope Leo XIV visits on the occasion the United States Ambassador to the Holy See, Mr. Brian Burch.

Today, July 4, marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

This is why the Vatican published this morning Pope Leo’s letter to the American people, in which he assures them of his prayers on this special occasion.

The pope spent the first half of Saturday making a pastoral visit to the southern Italian island of Lampedusa, demonstrating his closeness to migrants.

At the end of a busy day, the Holy See Press Room informed journalists that, “welcoming the invitation of the United States Ambassador to the Holy See, Brian Burch, the Holy Father visited the ambassador’s residence in Rome on Saturday evening, on the occasion of the national holiday.”

Friday evening, Rome time, on the eve of the anniversary, Pope Leo received the Medal of Freedom from the United States National Constitution Center in recognition of his lifelong commitment to religious freedom and freedom of conscience and expression around the world.

The Chicago-born pope addressed those gathered in Philadelphia via video message from the Vatican. He prayed that the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States would be an occasion for a renewed commitment to the fundamental ideals on which the nation was founded, especially life and liberty, concluding with the words “God bless America.”

“As a son of this great country, founded by courageous men and women who dreamed of freedom and a better life for themselves and their children,” Pope Leo said, “I join with you in asking God’s blessing on America’s future, so that the noble ideals enshrined at the beginning of the Declaration of Independence may continue to guide the nation’s flourishing in unity, justice and peace.”
