Farage’s gold dealings in Britain test his brand of populism as Restoration England rises | far right news

Despite carving out a down-to-earth image, Nigel Farage, leader of the far-right anti-immigration party Reform UK, is now one of the highest earners in parliament, with outside jobs bringing in more than $2.5 million since he becomes an MP in 2024.

He was referred to the parliamentary standards committee for an investigation into the 5 million pound ($6.8 million) gift. Last June, it emerged he was paid £270,000 ($360,000) for working 12 hours to promote gold bullion. This is a product that is barely affordable for the working-class voter base he claims to represent.

That contradiction is more important now than ever.

Farage’s earnings are being tested as Rupert Lowe’s Restore Britain positions itself as a purer populist alternative and erodes Reform’s poll lead. Can his anti-establishment brand survive scrutiny of his agency-sized pay?

“Behind too many populist radical right parties that claim to protect the people against the elites, there are usually very wealthy, elite men who fund the parties to advance their economic interests.” Tim Bale, professor of politics at Queen Mary University of London, told Al Jazeera.

For Farage personally, the risk is more immediate. “He is at serious risk of being seen as a complete hypocrite – the worst thing a politician can be accused of in Britain.

And if his popularity is damaged, the political parties that depend on him will suffer greatly.”

Britain’s political and financial system is based on trade-offs. Sam Power, an expert in political financing, electoral regulation and corruption at the University of Bristol, told Al Jazeera that political parties and individuals could receive unlimited donations if they were transparent about the source of their money.

In Farage’s case, Power explained that he was “working on the edge” of what public rules require declarations to be and testing the permitting system “to its absolute limits”.

He was blunt about whether transparency alone would be enough to hold politicians like Farage accountable.

“The simple answer to that is no,” he said.

He argued that true oversight requires stronger regulation behind it. Transparency without enforcement merely informs, not prevents, who is avoiding what.

Reform UK relies heavily on donations, about two-thirds of which come from wealthy individuals.

One of them is Christopher Harborne, a cryptocurrency investor based in Thailand. He is now the largest single donor in British history, giving more than 22 million pounds ($30 million) to reform. In 2025 alone, he donated £12 million ($16.3 million).

His relationship with Farage has been mired in controversy.

The Guardian recently revealed that the leader of Reform UK received an undeclared gift of 5 million pounds ($6.8 million) from Harborne in early 2024, weeks before Farage announced his bid to become an MP and run from Claxon.

Under House rules, new members must register all “registrable benefits” they received in the 12 months before an election.

The Conservatives referred Farage to the parliamentary standards commissioner for an investigation, raising questions about why such a large sum was hidden from the public.

Farage said he gifted the money to him “so I can be safe and secure for the rest of my life.”

New claims reported by The Sunday Times claim Farage failed to declare additional benefits from George Cottrell, who was convicted of wire fraud in the US in 2017. The benefits reportedly included staff who helped run his security and online activities before he became a member of parliament, as well as use of Cottrell’s properties near Buckingham Palace.

Farage’s team has denied breaking the rules, insisting the support was personal, not political, and that Reform UK itself covered his security and personnel costs following his return to frontline politics.

In a recent interview with the BBC, the anchor asked: “So Mr Farage, how much of that money did you spend?”

“It’s none of your business.” he answered.

One of Farage’s most lucrative financial endeavors is his role as a “brand ambassador” for London gold dealer Direct Bullion.

This year, Farage declared that he earned an eye-watering £270,000 from around 12 hours of work.

In 2025, he earned a total of £226,200 ($301,900) from the company.

Power said the deal could undermine Farage’s anti-establishment image, adding that the episode was part of a wider pattern of extremes on the political right. He compared it to US President Donald Trump’s reported billion-dollar cryptocurrency windfall since taking office.

More important to Farage’s popularity than the wealth itself, Power argues, is when the public associates his financial dealings with specific policy positions, including Reform UK’s light-touch stance on cryptocurrency regulation, along with Harborne’s cryptocurrency derivative wealth.

Power also suggested an investigation would be launched, pointing out Farage’s increasingly “annoying” tone in recent interviews.

The questions were being “mutilated,” he said.

Some reform voters remain loyal, others waver.

Despite these revelations, some British reform voters remain loyal.

Terry Scott, 61, a painter from Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, told Al Jazeera when asked if he would still vote for the party: “Every time.”

He said he trusts Farage “because he will do something”, adding that the deal does not affect his support or that of his friends who support reforming Britain.

Susan Atkinson, a 70-year-old retiree from Skerton, Lancashire, voted for Reform England in the 2024 general election but has not yet decided which party she will vote for next.

She said the revelations were symptomatic of politics more broadly. Politicians “make promises to the planet and then actually do nothing.”

Power estimates that Reform Britain’s vote cap of around 30% includes a soft layer of “reform-curious” voters (up to 10 percentage points) who are not as committed as core supporters.

Research into the recent Makerfield by-election found that the messaging around Harborne’s gift markedly reduced people’s willingness to vote for Reform UK. Labor’s Andy Burnham, expected to become Britain’s next prime minister, won the vote over his main challenger, Reform’s Robert Kenyon.

Power said there was a risk that issues such as direct bullion trading would push some support for reform towards the hard-line Restoration of Britain or further towards the Conservatives.

Voters increasingly see Reform as an “establishment party on the right” rather than a challenger, he said, meaning the same old defensive playbook may no longer work.

At the time of publication, Reform UK had not responded to Al Jazeera’s request for comment.
