‘Extreme’ marine heatwave expected in parts of UK, risking marine life

A marine heatwave could reach “extreme” levels in parts of the UK later this week, raising concerns about marine life, according to the Met Office.

Prolonged thermal heat could cause mass extinctions of some seaweeds, shellfish and other species, as well as greater numbers of warm-water creatures, including octopuses.

The heat wave is currently strongest on the east and south coasts of England, where sea temperatures could reach 4-5C above average in some areas.

The marine heatwave was fueled by a ‘heat dome’ that brought record temperatures in May and June, on top of long-term ocean warming caused by climate change.

Important marine habitats such as seagrass and kelp forests are suited to cool waters and can experience high levels of heat stress when temperatures soar.

This could reduce growth or lead to mass mortality events, which could have knock-on effects on species that rely on these habitats.

The UK has previously experienced marine heatwaves with unusually high sea surface temperatures.

But scientists fear the phenomenon could be particularly intense and long-lasting, particularly in parts of the English Channel and the southern North Sea.

“We are now starting to see the temperatures we expect to see in mid-summer. [at the] Late August,” said Dr Joe Jacobs of the National Oceanographic Center in Southampton.
