Strong 7.1 earthquake hits Philippines; There is no tsunami threat

An earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale struck off the southeastern coast of the Philippines early Thursday morning, the US Geological Survey said, with various agencies ruling out the possibility of a tsunami.

An earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale struck off the southeastern coast of the Philippines early Thursday morning, the US Geological Survey said, with various agencies ruling out the possibility of a tsunami.

The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred at a depth of 65.6 km.

CNN reported that the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) initially said damage and aftershocks were expected.

However, there were no early reports of major shocks or damage.

Phivolks also said there is a threat of a tsunami over the country, while the US Weather Service and Hawaii Emergency Management said there was no tsunami risk on the US West Coast or Hawaii either.
