A woman organizes aid for earthquake victims in Haiti

Monroe County, EW News (WBRE/WYOU) – A Monroe County woman with ties to Haiti is coordinating relief efforts to help people affected by the disaster.

The earthquake that struck southwestern Haiti killed nearly two thousand people and injured thousands.

As those numbers continue to rise, a nurse practicing in the Poconos plans to provide assistance to those in her home country.

“I have some roots in Haiti, my parents continue to instill the traditions of our culture in our home, and so here I am,” said Herlin Raphael.

Raphael immigrated from Haiti to the United States when she was eight years old with her family.

She now works as a nurse practitioner and is using her medical knowledge to help the people of Haiti after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake on Sunday.

We are looking to gather medical supplies, over-the-counter medicines and antibiotics, as well as some health supplies. Every day use the items so that we can bring them to the affected individuals,” Rafael explained.

Rafael is also looking forward to collecting tents as thousands remain displaced as tropical storm Haiti rains.

“After the earthquake, the displaced families are now dealing with homelessness, no home during this hurricane, or what we call before the hurricane that now hit Haiti,” Rafael said.

Raphael is the founder of the non-profit Helping Hands and Beyond, founded in 2009, the organization provides public health services and coordinates medical mission trips around the world.

“We travel to the villages, we travel to the mountains, we go where we need to work, we work,” Raphael said.
