The family of the Knoxville couple survived the Haiti earthquake

Knoxville, Tenn (Washington) – A Knoxville couple share their family’s survival story. Many of their loved ones live in Haiti and were hit by a devastating earthquake over the weekend.

Its magnitude was 7.2 and the death toll is now nearly 2,000. Among the survivors are the fathers and siblings of a Knoxville man. Everyone in his immediate family: parents, brother and sisters are fine. However, some extended relatives did not succeed.

The stark truth of those who survived is that they lost almost everything, including their home.

Jean-Bernard Fatton says: “One side of their house is completely on the floor. I saw the roof on the floor, and then I saw a whole bunch of avalanches on the side as well. I think it kind of collapsed from the middle.”

A strong earthquake hit Haiti on Saturday morning. It was a day of panic and anxiety for Fatone and his wife in Knoxville.

“I want to say it was very early in the morning when we learned of the earthquake, and it wasn’t until early in the evening that we finally heard from a member of his family,” says his wife, Tirjuna Minor-Fatun.

Fatone was concerned about how his family would obtain food, shelter, and medical needs. “I’m sure some of them have been infected, and they definitely need medical relief in some way,” he said. “You think of a 7.2 magnitude earthquake, if it happened near your city, you could probably go to a nearby city and go to their hotel. It’s available to us here. But in Haiti sometimes it’s really hard to get to these things.”

The couple says they take it day in and day out, trying to help his loved ones and talk to them when they can make contact.

“You can hear in their voices that they’re going through a lot. And they don’t even know what the next steps are. They get very defeated sometimes, but they also have hope, in a sense, that things will eventually get better. But for now, it’s Really hard and really tough.”

Fatun and his wife hold on to hope and exchange a message of sympathy.

“These are loved ones of people and these are fellow human beings who suffer and endure unimaginable circumstances. If nothing else, just being able to open your heart and understand that there is devastation going on,” said Minor Faton.

Fatons have fundraisers to support relief and recovery efforts for their families, including GoFundMe.

The “A Kiss from Jesus Pudding & More” campaign is also sponsoring a meal fundraiser. This happens on Sunday, August 22nd. Pickup begins at 4 p.m. at 1718 North Central Street in Knoxville.
