Residential Eating Disorder Treatment Center in Western Michigan
Patients previously had to leave the state on long waiting lists to treat inpatients with eating disorders.
Mann, Michigan — Sanford Behavioral Health is preparing to open Michigan’s first Residential Eating Disorder Center in western Michigan.
The center in Mann will open this spring.
Chief Clinical Officer Jenny Celent called the opening “monumental.” She often stated that patients were referred to inpatient treatment options in other states, many of which had long waiting lists.
“In Michigan, there is generally a significant shortage of healthcare providers and treatment programs,” Celent said. “Michigan suffers from a lot of stigma, misinformation, and mis-education due to the lack of specialists in this area.”
The center includes a strong medical team, nutrition therapy team, recreational therapist and more.
“We’re not just launching our first home eating disorder program, we’re trying to set the standard for treatment in the state,” says Celent. It’s paving the way for Michigan. “
Gail Hall, Executive Director of Eating Disorder Services at Sanford Behavioral Health, called the center “a professional dream come true.”

It was an eating disorder awareness week, and Hall said it was important to help break down the stigma associated with seeking mental health treatments, including eating disorders. She has worked in this area for 30 years, but she said that the understanding of people affected by eating disorders has changed significantly.
“There are a lot of men, transgender individuals, young people and old people, all of whom are struggling,” Hall said. “And it’s not just weight, so you can’t tell if you have an eating disorder just by looking at someone. It’s about mental health and secret behavior.”
Eating disorders can be dangerous if left untreated. According to Sanford Behavioral Health, eating disorders have the second highest psychological mortality rate after opioid addiction.
“There are so many denials and so many distrusts that individuals are really sick enough to require a higher level of care,” Hall said.
Eating disorders often begin with a diet. Often at a young age. According to Selent, 46% of 10-year-olds say they eat occasionally or very often.
Pandemics also increase the need for treatment and awareness of eating disorders. Many people who are prone to eating disorders and other mental health disorders have been caused by isolation and lack of control over the past few years.
“Treatment needs to be very comprehensive and holistic,” Selent said. “There are a lot of mental health aspects that need treatment. Then there are biological aspects. There are also genetic aspects. What we really want when an individual comes here. There are many. They are treated as one person. “
