“Our hypothesis is that this event could have caused a very high mortality rate among people, or it may also have led to the migration of a large number of people to other areas,” said archaeologist Diego Salazar.

The study, published in the journal Science Advances, took about seven years to complete, and aims to determine how often these disasters struck the region in antiquity.

Chile, which straddles the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire,” a seismically active region surrounding the Pacific Ocean where different layers of Earth’s crust meet, has a long history of deadly earthquakes.
