Non-earthquake event launches USGS

SAN DIEGO – A “non-earthquake event” triggered a false report of an earthquake off the coast of Catalina Island Friday morning, the US Geological Survey said.

The USGS website initially reported that an earthquake occurred 18 miles southwest of Avalon, a town on the southern tip of the island, at 9:48 a.m., but the event was later deleted, and officials now say they are adjusting their system to account for the causes. false stimulus.

“This is our first time because these events are so rare,” USGS ShakeAlert tweeted shortly after 11 a.m.

An earthquake was felt near Ensenada in San Diego

No public alerts were issued, the USGS said, because they did not reach the early warning system threshold of 4.5.

“The #ShakeAlert team is now making improvements based on what we learned from this event,” said a second tweet.

ShakeAlert coordinator Robert de Groot described the trigger as a “noise glitch,” but said it was not yet clear if the glitch was purely technical or if something in the outside world had made the “noise.”

De Groot told FOX 5 by phone that four of the agency’s seismic stations should get the same reading before the earthquake report is released. There are hundreds of monitoring stations scattered throughout Southern California, and ensuring that multiple monitors got the same reading helps prevent an anomaly from running ShakeAlert.

In this case, four separate stations recorded whatever caused the false alarm. Additionally, some people reported having a shake on the agency’s “Did You Feel It?” show. Map of the area.

De Groot and his team will now work to determine the reason for reading.

“Earth does strange things all the time,” he told FOX 5, describing the incident as a “learning opportunity” for ShakeAlert that would require weeks of investigation and tweaking to the system.

The false report came just over 12 hours after a 4.6-magnitude earthquake near Ensenada shook San Diego.
