Global victims of sudden and mysterious hepatitis in children rise to 650 cases

WHO reported on Friday that about one-third, 222 cases occurred in the United Kingdom and an additional 216 cases were reported in the United States.

Prior to this outbreak, about half of cases of sudden hepatitis (or liver inflammation) in infants could not be linked to known causes. Most of the affected children (75%) are young and under 5 years old. Most children were healthy before they got sick.

Common viruses known to cause hepatitis, such as hepatitis A, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, hepatitis D, and hepatitis E, are excluded from these children. The strongest association between cases appears to be a virus called adenovirus 41, which is known to cause stomach upsets such as diarrhea and vomiting. Many affected children reported these symptoms before they had jaundice. At that time, the white of their eyes and perhaps their skin developed a yellowish tint, which is a sign of liver problems.

But adenovirus 41 is not the obvious cause, experts say. Because it is not known to cause hepatitis in children whose immune system is not weakened.
