A day after Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez announced the first case of monkeypox at the county jail, medical personnel at his office said there was no indication the virus was spreading to other inmates at the Downtown Houston facility. Stated.

As of Wednesday, Harris County had 520 monkeypox cases, 421 of them in Houston residents, according to online data provided by the county. After a gradual rise in cases in the Houston area since mid-June, county data shows a decline in new cases over the past two weeks.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, monkeypox is rarely fatal and usually clears up within 2 to 4 weeks. According to the CDC, symptoms usually appear within three weeks of exposure and include fever, headache, muscle aches, chills, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat, cough, respiratory problems such as congestion, acne and blisters. There are rashes such as face, mouth and other parts of the body.

According to the CDC, close or intimate person-to-person contact, such as kissing, hugging, and sex, is a means of spreading monkeypox. The virus can also be spread by contact with respiratory secretions, infectious rashes, scabs, bodily fluids, or infected items such as clothing and bedding.

Casely-Hayford said the Harris County Jail inmate with monkeypox was quarantined at the time he was booked into the jail, in accordance with the county’s COVID-19 protocol. He first reported symptoms on August 21 and received a positive test result on August 24.

Casely-Hayford said less than 1% of the prison population (less than 100 inmates) is currently infected with COVID.

The risk of contracting monkeypox to the general public remains low, according to the Harris County Public Health Department.
