Return of destroyed Buddhas in Afghanistan – BBC News

When the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in 1996, they imposed an extreme version of Islamic law across the country. They tried to erase all traces of a rich pre-Islamic past and ordered the destruction of ancient states, including the world’s tallest Buddhist ones. These memories are alive to millions of Afghans. They have now become a concern, as the U.S. and the Afghan government have negotiated with the Taliban to reach an agreement that they could see returning to power in Afghanistan. The BBC visited the Shoaib Sharifi National Museum in Kabul, where a group is rebuilding some ancient Buddha sculptures destroyed by the Taliban. Produced by Camelia Sadeghzadeh. Subscribe HERE .
