Anneliese Borges from Euronews reports on the earthquake in southern Turkey

Any hopes of finding more survivors from the earthquakes in southern Turkey and neighboring Syria are fading fast.

It is difficult to give an exact figure on how many people were killed after the February 6 disaster, but the latest estimates put the death toll at over 48,000 and growing as more bodies are discovered.

13 million people were affected in some way by the earthquakes in southern Turkey, many of them made homeless, their homes and apartments either collapsed or it was too dangerous to return to them.

However, life must go on for those who survive, though it is hard when they have lost their loved ones and perhaps their home as well.

Serkan Sincan is a business owner in Antakya, southern Turkey. He spoke to Euronews correspondent Aneliz Borges.

He told her: “This street will open in one week, maximum two weeks. The shops will be open – you’ll see.”

“It’s been 13 days…and people will die in trouble (in an earthquake), or in a crowd, or at home…The catastrophe is over now. In Islam, you can only be in grief for three days. After three days, it’s over.” Life must come again.”

Although Serkam did not lose his family members in the quake, he says he is scarred by what he lost, namely close friends, who he says he is crying inside.

But he says he is determined to stay in Antakya on behalf of those who lost their lives and will try to convince others to stay too.

“The city needs them,” he says.
