4.5-magnitude earthquake near Hollister, California hit store shelves, felt even in San Francisco, Fresno

Hollister, Calif. – A preliminary 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck San Benito County on Tuesday afternoon, according to the US Geological Survey.

The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred 2 km north of Tres Pinos at 3:23 p.m.

The California Geological Survey says the quake occurred near Hollister in the Calaveras Fault area. They say geologists felt the shaking in the CGS Bay Area office.

Aftershocks can be expected as officials continue to monitor the area.

So far, there have been no reports of any major damage or injuries.

In Hollister, the earthquake was strong enough to knock produce onto the floors of aisles in grocery stores.

Zhang Su, owner of Hollister Super, said the quake seemed to be longer than other quakes in the past.

“A little jolt and then it rolled a little bit but it wasn’t really horrible,” he said.

It was a little scary, said Elvira Postelos, director of Hollister Super. Customers and staff shaken.

“Everything started to fall and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, earthquake, what do I know? Because it’s been a long time since we’ve had an earthquake of this magnitude,'” Bustillos said.

After making sure no one was hurt, the Hollister Super managers went into cleanup mode.

“There was a lot of glass on the floor, salsa on the floor — the smell was so spicy, hahaha,” Bustillos said.

At Dollar General they are closed for the rest of the day to deal with cleaning.

At Milady Nail Spa, they only had a few products tip over, but the earthquake was long enough to cause customers to panic.

“One of our ladies was sitting in the farthest pedicure chair and she took off her shoes, ran outside. Just really scared – no shoes,” said Carly Esparza.

The earthquake was a reminder to prepare.

“We don’t have earthquakes all the time, but we forget, so this is just a good reminder of safety and what to do if there’s a bigger earthquake coming,” said Elvira Postelos.
