A San Antonio doctor warned that the number of young people infected with the coronavirus was increasing after telling patients that they had attended a “COVID party.”
Dr Jane Appleby, Chief Medical Officer at Methodist Hospital, said a 30-year-old man died shortly after telling a nurse.
The hospital issued a video statement from Appleby over the weekend hoping that young people would notice the need to protect themselves from the virus.

“I just want to take a few minutes to share what we’re seeing in the whole city or Methodist Hospital over the last few weeks.
Currently, the Ministry of Health reports that 22% of people tested for the COVID virus are positive. It is about 1 in 5 people. This is a worrisome increase from a positive rate of about 5% just a few weeks ago.
As the virus spreads and affects more people in our community, we can see that it affects a broader range of age groups, including young people in their 20s and 30s. What we have learned about this virus is that it is not discriminatory and no one is invincible.
I don’t want to be vigilant. We are trying to share some real-life examples so that the community can recognize that this virus can be very serious and can spread easily. This week I heard a heartbreaking story.
I told a nurse that I was attending a COVID party, taking care of a 30 year old patient at Methodist Hospital. This is a party held by someone who has been diagnosed with the COVID virus, where people can come together to see if the virus is genuine and if anyone is infected.
Just before the patient died, they looked at the nurse and said, “I think I made a mistake. I thought this was hoax, but it wasn’t.”
This is just one example of the potentially avoidable death of a young member of our community, and I cannot imagine the loss of a family. Today, Methodist Hospital has some severely ill patients aged 20 and 30.
Some of these young people can come to the hospital and go home for treatment, but others get sick very quickly and require intensive care. People with high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity appear to be at high risk of becoming severely ill with the COVID virus.
