Huntsville, Alabama (weapon) – Canine parvovirus infections are on the rise this spring, but new treatments are being developed that could save your pet’s life.
When it gets warmer, you might want to go to the park with your furry friend for some fresh air, but contact with a dog infected with canine parvovirus can be deadly.
Susan Muller, M.D., of Animal Care Clinic, says people want to go out with their pets, which increases the number of infected people every spring, but the virus is highly contagious, so keep your dogs safe. The first step is to get vaccinated.
“They occur cyclically, typically in the spring,” Dr. Muller said. “The best thing to do is prevent it. The best way to prevent parvovirus is to start vaccinating at six weeks of age.”
Signs of the virus in dogs include anorexia, fever/hypothermia, vomiting, and severe bloody diarrhea.
Wesley Klendinen, M.D., of South Huntsville Veterinary Hospital, said currently there is only symptomatic treatment for infected dogs, but a new treatment that actively fights the virus will be announced at the end of June.
“Essentially there are monoclonal antibody treatments against parvo, but this is a very big deal,” said Dr. Klendinen. “This will completely change the landscape when it comes to treating parvovirus, and it is just about to be rolled out to veterinary hospitals.”
Dr. Mueller said it would be costly, but would save families a lot of heartache.
“This would have to be sent to the veterinarian on dry ice, which makes it a little more expensive, but it seems worth it if it prevents the tragic death of parvovirus,” Dr. Muller said. rice field.
Both clinics say they will offer the new treatment when it begins rolling out in June.
