LDH and NOHD to provide mpox vaccine at New Orleans Pride event
The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) will work with the New Orleans Department of Health (NOHD) to provide the mpox vaccine during two upcoming Pride events.
Vaccination sites are located at:
- Black Pride Community Fest: Friday, June 9, 1-5 p.m. Lemann Park, 628 N. Claiborne Ave. (along Lafitte Greenway)
- Pride Fest: Saturday, June 10, 11am-6pm, 941 Elysian Fields Ave.
LDH continues to identify new cases of mpox in Louisiana residents, but the levels are much lower than reported in the summer of 2022. With summer events and festivals on the horizon, Louisiana may be at risk of a resurgence of mpox or new mpox outbreaks. LDH and NOHD encourage those most at risk to stay up to date on the mpox vaccine to protect themselves and others.
Groups at highest risk of mpox include:
- You are a gay, bisexual, or other male who has sex with men, or a transgender, nonbinary, or gender-diverse person who has been one of the following within the past six months:
- New diagnosis of one or more sexually transmitted infections (eg, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis)
- multiple sex partners
- Have you had any of the following within the last 6 months:
- Having sex in a commercial sex venue (such as a sex club or public bathhouse)
- Sexual activity associated with large commercial events or geographic areas (such as cities or counties) where transmission of the mpox virus occurs
- Had a sex partner diagnosed with MPX within the past 2 weeks
- Suffering from HIV or other causes of immunosuppression and expected to be at current or future risk of Mpox exposure due to any of the above scenarios
About mpox
Mpox is a potentially serious viral disease caused by a virus spread through close physical contact. The disease can cause ailments such as skin bumps, blisters, and painful rashes that look like ulcers. Some people get a flu-like illness before the rash appears.
Anyone who has had close personal contact with an infected person can become infected, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
Although the mpox vaccine is a valuable tool for disease prevention, there are other preventive measures that can be taken. These include washing hands frequently with soap or water, using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, and avoiding contact with objects or materials used by people with mpox.
The JYNNEOS mpox vaccine is given in two doses 28 days apart. LDH and NOHD will announce additional second vaccination events as scheduled.
