More earthquakes hit Virginia. Is a big one coming?

In recent weeks, Virginia has been hit by more earthquakes than usual, leading some experts to wonder if a larger earthquake is coming.

Six quakes have been detected in the western part of the state since mid-June, according to the US Geological Survey, which is based in Fairfax County.

People felt at least three of the earthquakes.

Typically, only two or three earthquakes are felt by residents across Virginia each year.

“It’s very little activity here,” said Martin Chapman, a professor of geophysics at Virginia Tech. “When you see a series of these things in a smaller area, you have to take into account the fact that they could be harbingers of a larger earthquake.”

On the scale, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 on the Richter scale is considered a medium-magnitude earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3. All recent earthquakes in Virginia have been smaller, around a level of 2.5 on the Richter scale.

“We’re taking a good look at it and watching our instruments a little bit more closely to make sure we don’t miss more small earthquakes, because if you see a continuous sequence that’s something you have to pay attention to,” Chapman said.

Although not every major earthquake follows “earthquakes”.

The Mineral, Virginia, earthquake that rocked the metropolitan area in 2011 had a magnitude of 5.8 and came out of the blue.

“We didn’t see any tremors from that earthquake,” Chapman said. “You can’t always predict what earthquakes will do.”

The 2011 earthquake was probably the most widespread earthquake in North American history, due to the densely populated East Coast, according to the Reston-based USGS.

It left behind property losses of between $200 and $300 million.

The structures that were dismantled included the Washington Monument, which sustained brick damage on all four sides. Washington National Cathedral suffered about $34 million in damages.

“I’m just reminding everyone in Virginia that we have earthquakes and sometimes they are devastating,” Chapman said. “Just be aware of the fact that we can have this stuff.”
