A 6.1 magnitude earthquake hits the waters off the eastern town of Davao

MANILA, Philippines – A strong and deep 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck the waters off Governor Generoso town in Davao Oriental on Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

According to the state seismic experts' bulletin, the tectonic tremor occurred at 5:11 pm, about 149 kilometers southeast of Governor Generoso. The focus depth was 105 km.

The earthquake was recorded at Instrumental Intensity IV in Malungon, Sarangani.

It even warned of the possibility of aftershocks that could follow the movement of the deep Earth.

Phivolcs added that no damage is expected due to the earthquake.

The magnitude 3 quake was felt in Tagum City and other areas in Davao del Norte, according to the provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office.

Friday's quake came a day after two fairly strong, shallow earthquakes – magnitude 5.0 and 4.8 – struck an hour apart off the coast of Baganga town, also located in Davao Oriental, north of the latest event.
