How did you start making architectural models? Have you always had an interest in architecture and design?

Richard Gardiner (RG): My career in art education was as a high school art teacher. The primary subject of instruction was design, which is essentially a problem solving process. For some time I have also taught art history with an emphasis on architecture, so the content of both these subjects helped spark interest in architectural objects. A number of my students have gone on to study architecture and are now established in the profession, and there is some architecture in the family as well, so it has always been an important area for me.

After making a model for our house a few years ago and then did the same with colleagues, I set up Scaled Down by being online. Then the practice grew as a result of the Christchurch earthquake in 2011, after which people wanted examples of buildings they had lost, as souvenirs. These were, for the most part, private homes, but there were also churches and other civilian buildings.

What does the form creation process look like? Are the plans used as a starting point, and is there a different process if the plans are not available?

RG: My models fall easily into two categories: existing buildings or those that already exist and that have been destroyed by earthquakes or another event; A new build for developers or architects.

If the houses still exist, then I will take dozens of photos, among them, draw drawings to determine the size and design, solve many structural problems and clarify the details. Google Maps greatly helps provide information about location, roof engineering and any other questions I may have. For the most part, the models are made of card, balsa and plastic. The process always involves a great deal of crafts or drawing. Laser cutting replaces craft knives and guarantees complete precision and accuracy.

In the case of modeling new buildings, plans and heights provide information. Since Christchurch undergoes major reconstruction after the earthquake, my main focus has been on modeling apartment blocks, retail buildings, and the like.

How did creating these models change your relationship with the architecture around you? Much of your work focuses on making models of heritage and earthquake-affected buildings. What made you create this profession as a conservation of heritage buildings?

RG: The process of making these models – of which there are now over a hundred – has made me more aware of local architecture and confirmed our responsibility to preserve heritage buildings if possible. Inevitably in rebuilding like we are seeing in Christchurch, the quality of the newly built environment is changing, but when speaking to groups about my own business, I always encourage them to be better informed about their city; Find out who designed the buildings, the style they represent and have informed opinions about them.
