Colorado farm worker tests positive for H5N1 avian flu, CDC says – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth
A fourth farm worker has been infected in a growing bird flu outbreak linked to dairy cows. health officials reported Wednesday.
The man, who had direct contact with infected dairy cows on a farm in northeastern Colorado, developed conjunctivitis and recovered after receiving antiviral treatment, according to state and federal health officials.
Three previous cases of human infections linked to cattle Since March, avian influenza cases have been reported on dairy farms in Texas and Michigan, two of whom also developed conjunctivitis and one with mild respiratory symptoms. In 2022, the first U.S. case of avian influenza was detected in a Colorado farm worker who had come into contact with infected poultry.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention The new infections “do not change” the agency's assessment that the risk to the general public remains low. Surveillance systems tracking influenza in the U.S. have not shown any unusual activity, the agency said. But people who have had prolonged contact with infected birds or other animals, including livestock, or their environments are at higher risk of infection.
According to the CDC, the Colorado man was under surveillance when he developed symptoms because he worked with dairy cows. Testing at the state level was inconclusive, but a sample sent to the CDC tested positive. Full results of genetic analysis of the sample are pending.
As of Wednesday, more than 135 dairy farms in 12 states had reported cases of the poultry-borne H5N1 virus, according to the USDA.
