OPH confirms first case of West Nile virus in city this year
Ottawa Public Health (OPH) has confirmed the presence of West Nile virus in local mosquitoes and the city's first case of infection of 2024.
OPH has been monitoring mosquitoes for the virus since June 1.
in Friday evening press releaseThe agency confirmed it had detected both the first positive mosquito-borne case this year, as well as the first case of human infection.
Alison Samuel, a public health inspector at the Dutch Ministry of Health, said in an interview Saturday that the virus currently poses a “medium to high” risk to public safety.
Samuel added that the infected person has now recovered.
There were no confirmed cases in Ottawa last year.
In 2023, there were 54 confirmed cases of West Nile virus infection across Ontario, but no confirmed cases in Ottawa.
West Nile virus is spread primarily by the northern house mosquito, Culex pipiens. Only a small number of people bitten by a mosquito that carries the virus become infected.
However, about 20% of infected people may experience flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches and rash.
Fewer than 1% of infected people become seriously ill, and the virus can affect the central nervous system. The risk of severe illness increases with age and is even higher in people with weakened immune systems, according to OPH.
OPH urges residents to take the following steps to prevent mosquito bites and keep mosquitoes from breeding:
- Apply a Health Canada approved mosquito repellent containing DEET or Icaridin to your skin and clothing.
- Protect yourself between dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active, and when you are in shade, bushes or wooded areas.
- Wear light-colored, tightly woven, loose-fitting clothing, such as long pants, long-sleeved shirts, shoes, and socks.
- Make sure all window and door screens are in good condition.
- Every week, remove any standing water around the home, including bird baths, toys, flower pot saucers, pool covers, old tires, wheelbarrows, buckets and cans.
- Ensure that all rainwater tank openings are covered with screen mesh at all times.
The City of Ottawa is also implementing a program to monitor areas of standing water on city property weekly and administer mosquito larvae control, OPH said.
