Top-seeded Novak Djokovic could face old rival Rafael Nadal in the second round of the Olympic tennis tournament in Paris.

Djokovic was paired with Australia's Matthew Ebden on Thursday and Nadal will face Hungary's Marton Fucsovics, with the winners of those matches meeting in round two. The 38-year-old Nadal has won a record 14 of his 22 major trophies at the French Open, winning gold in singles in Beijing in 2008 and in doubles with Marc Lpez in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

Meanwhile, two-time Olympic gold medallist Andy Murray said he will not compete in singles at the Games and will prioritise doubles in his final tournament before retirement. Murray skipped the singles event in his final appearance at Wimbledon this month after undergoing surgery to remove a cyst in his spine, but had initially been scheduled to play in the singles and doubles, partnering Dan Evans, in Paris.

“I'm happy to compete for my country again. Unfortunately, I've been training to prepare for the singles and doubles, but I'm getting older now and I just didn't have time anymore,” he said after the draw at Roland Garros. “But I'm happy to be with Dan in the doubles and we're playing well together and I hope we can have a good run.”

Murray won the singles gold at London 2012 by beating Roger Federer in the final. Four years later he successfully defended his title in Rio by beating Juan Martin del Potro.

Poland's top-seeded Iga Swiatek will face Romania's Irina-Camella Begu in the opening round of the women's tournament, with American second-seeded Coco Gauff taking on Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic.

Meanwhile, Djokovic and Nadal are likely to meet for the 60th time in all major competitions. The Serbian team currently leads with 30 wins to Nadal's 29.
