Consequences: Earthquake shakes Hunter region

An earthquake struck the Hunter region this afternoon.

The Australian Geoscience Service initially issued a warning for a 5.0 magnitude earthquake near the town of Denman, which struck just after noon at a depth of about 10 kilometres.

It was later re-rated to 4.8 (MW) in power.

About fifteen minutes later, a secondary earthquake of magnitude 2.9 was recorded at the same depth, about 4 kilometers to the northeast of the epicenter of the first earthquake.

The tremors shook the area around Muswellbrook, as well as Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Port Stephens. They were also felt as far south as the Central Coast and Sydney, and in Tamworth to the north.

Although a wide area was affected, including along the coast, the Met Office assured the public that there was no threat of a tsunami.

The New South Wales Ambulance Service said it had received no reports of injuries as a result of the quake.

While there were no immediate reports of major damage, some problems were beginning to emerge.

According to the NSW Police, the lead agency, the state's emergency service responds to about a dozen simple calls.

The Emergency Services Authority said on Friday afternoon that crews were responding to minor damage to infrastructure in Maitland and Muswellbrook and that the agency was in proactive contact with dam owners to ensure the safety of those structures remained intact.

Ausgrid is working to restore power to around 2,500 homes and businesses after a power outage affected Muswellbrook, Denman, Jerrys Plains, Bureen and Bengalla.

Parents of students at St James Primary School in Muswellbrook were asked to collect their children early due to a power outage, and the southern Muswellbrook area was also evacuated.

It was a similar situation at Newcastle University, where the city campus was briefly evacuated, before students and staff were given the green light to return indoors.

Joe from Wallarup, just south of Dungog, said the quake felt very strong when it shook the house.

“The cabinets were shaking, the glassware was clinking together in the cabinets, the TV was shaking, the chairs we were sitting in were moving.”

Debbie was working at Callaghan and described feeling the seismic activity as “shaking and shaking through the office.”

Hundreds of people have taken to social media to share similar experiences, from windows and walls shaking or swaying, to strange behavior by pets and livestock.

On average, there are about a hundred earthquakes of magnitude greater than 3.0 each year in Australia.
