TotalEnergies’ floating offshore wind project to power UK oil and gas platform

France's TotalEnergies plans to launch a floating offshore wind demonstration project that will supply renewable energy to the Culzean offshore platform in the UK's North Sea.

The 3MW floating wind turbine will be located 2km west of the Culzean platform and 220km off the east coast of Scotland.

According to TotalEnergies, the wind turbines will be installed on a modular, lightweight, semi-submersible floating hull designed by Ocergy, which allows for rapid assembly and optimized costs.

The turbines are expected to be fully operational by the end of next year and are expected to supply about 20% of Culzen’s electricity needs, reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the company said.

TotalEnergies has signed a contract with Archer Wind, Archer’s floating offshore wind solutions provider, to supply a floating wind foundation.

The pilot project has been selected in Crown Estate Scotland’s Innovation and Targeted Oil and Gas (INTOG) Leasing Round for 2023.

The INTOG process allowed developers to apply for subsea rights to either directly supply renewable electricity to oil and gas infrastructure (TOG) to reduce emissions from the North Sea oil and gas sector, or to develop offshore wind projects consisting of small-scale (IN) innovative projects of 100 MW or less.

The proposed projects have a capacity of up to 449MW for IN and up to 5GW for TOG. Crown Estate Scotland provides a 25-year subsea lease for IN and 50 years for TOG.
