Nevada schools prepare for World Earthquake Day with earthquake drills

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — As Nevada prepares for World Earthquakes Day on Oct. 17, schools across the state are preparing students for potential earthquakes.

At Tom Williams Elementary School, second graders participated in an interactive earthquake preparedness exercise, practicing the “drop, cover and wait” technique.

Angela Fairport, the school's second-grade teacher, stressed the importance of these exercises. She added: “With every training, it is important to stress that we want them to be safe. We want them to go home with their families.”

Director Cary Riesbeck highlighted the necessity of such exercises, noting Nevada's geological vulnerabilities. “We face many fault lines, so being prepared for them is extremely important to keep students and staff safe,” Riesbeck said.

These exercises come as part of a broader effort to enhance preparedness for earthquakes in the state. Christy Rowe of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno, discussed the potential implementation of the MyShake app, which uses motion data to provide early warnings of earthquakes. The app is already available in neighboring countries and can provide a warning of up to a minute.

“Nevada has unique geology and unique tectonic environments, so we're going to have to make sure it's fit for purpose here for Nevadans,” Rowe said. “Once we have this plan in place, we are looking at 2-3 years to build out the network.”

“What can someone do in 45 to 60 seconds of time if there's an earthquake? It's going to be massive… with a few seconds of warning,” Rowe added.

Until the app is available in Nevada, schools like Tom Williams Elementary will continue to rely on traditional drills to ensure safety. The Great Nevada ShakeOut will take place on October 17 at 10:17 a.m., with participants encouraged to “drop, cover and hold” for at least 60 seconds.
