A memorial ceremony was held at 9:30 a.m. Monday to honor quake victims in Chamkou Town, the area hardest hit by the 6.8-magnitude quake in Dengri County, southwest China's Xicang Autonomous Region.

Hundreds of participants, including soldiers from the People's Liberation Army, armed police, firefighters, public security officers, medical workers, young volunteers, employees from relevant companies, officials and representatives of the affected community, stood in silence with their hats on for three minutes and mourned the deceased citizens, Xinhua News Agency reported.

Monday marks the seventh day since the 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit Dingri in Xizang. The earthquake struck on the morning of January 7. With high force and intensity, it led to the loss of 126 people and damage to 27,248 families, including the collapse of 3,612 homes. The earthquake affected five provinces, covering 26 towns and 206 villages (communities), and nearly 61,500 people were affected to varying degrees.

At present, a total of 407 people have been successfully rescued, and more than 47,500 disaster-affected individuals have been properly transported. Earthquake relief efforts are being implemented in an efficient and organized manner. At present, Shizang is doing its best to coordinate temporary and transitional housing arrangements to ensure affected residents stay warm during the winter.
