A swarm of earthquakes hit San Ramon Friday night

OAKLAND, Calif. – There were at least six separate earthquakes measuring more than 2.5 in a seismic swarm in the San Ramon area Friday night. No damage was reported, but local residents were somewhat disturbed by the hesitation.

The first earthquake in this series, with a magnitude of 2.5, occurred at 7:41 p.m., and was followed by two simultaneous earthquakes at 7:49 p.m., with magnitudes of 2.9 and 3.6, respectively.

A magnitude 4.0 earthquake, which will be the strongest of the evening, struck at 7:46 p.m. Two subsequent earthquakes occurred over the next four minutes, with magnitudes of 3.1 and 2.9, respectively.

The epicenter was east of Interstate 680, south of San Ramon.

This area witnessed constant seismic activity during the past week. As the US Geological Survey reported, Friday night's quakes were the latest in a group of dozens of earthquakes that struck on Monday and Tuesday.

“Really, it was very loud,” said Krishna, who gave only her first name. “We were upstairs, and everything was shaking.”

“My car started shaking back and forth,” said Annabelle, who did not give her last name. She said she was a little scared.

Sarah, who did not give her last name, said: “I felt like… I don't know… I drank too much. But I didn't. It was an earthquake.”

KTVU received video of a chandelier shaking during the earthquake swarm. We received calls into the newsroom from viewers who felt the shaking across the East Bay. People called from Lafayette, Walnut Creek, Castro Valley and Newark.

It has been nearly a decade since San Ramon residents have experienced such high levels of seismic activity. In November, the city witnessed nearly twenty earthquakes with a magnitude exceeding two on the Richter scale. As of Friday evening, the number of earthquakes in December was more than double that.

The only other recorded example of such high activity in the past 50 years was a two-month period in 2015, which actually saw more earthquakes.

A large number of earthquakes in a short period is referred to as an earthquake swarm, which is a series of small earthquakes that occur repeatedly in the same area.

Experts say earthquake swarms should not be viewed as an indication that a larger quake is imminent.

“Based on previous research, we recognize that swarms may indicate that there is an additional 'component' where earthquakes occur… Sometimes that component may be that the fault slips slowly, and small sticky patches emerge and generate many small earthquakes,” the 2019 USGS report said. “Sometimes, magma may push into the crust, making a path for itself by breaking up the rock in front of it. But more often, swarms are likely caused by fluid interaction (Mostly water) with faults.”
