A 5.1 magnitude earthquake shakes the state of Assam and was felt by the people of Meghalaya | India News

An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck Morigaon, Assam at 04:17:40 EDT on Monday, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported. The tremor was felt by residents of several areas in the state of Assam and even in Shillong in the state of Meghalaya.

According to the National Center for Statistics, the epicenter of the quake was located at 26.37 degrees north latitude and 92.29 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 50 kilometers in Morigaon, Assam.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage. Authorities urged residents to remain alert and follow safety precautions in the event of aftershocks.

According to a PTI report, people in neighboring Kamrup Metropolitan Districts, Nagaon, East Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, Hojai, Dima Hasao, Golaghat, Jorhat, Jorhada, Charideo, Cachar, Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Dhubri, South Salmara Mankachar and Goalpara also felt the shock.

The tremor forced people to leave their homes to open their sleeping areas.

According to a report by the National Center for Seismology, the quake was also felt in some areas of central-western Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and several districts of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and West Bengal.
