Lancashire has been relegated from the County Championship, has won next to nothing and despite praise for its diversity and gender equality agenda, the board has been criticized for lacking in-depth cricket expertise. Meanwhile, rivals are seeking to privatize Yorkshire, 30 miles away on the M62, inviting private capital to fund the redevelopment of Headingley and bring test cricket back to Leeds. Their CEO Sanjay Patel made the matter calmly and clearly: without external investment, Yorkshire simply cannot compete. Two clubs. Two very different approaches. One shared problem: In a member-owned sport, commercial success means nothing if the people who own the club don’t feel like winners. So here’s my question: Can professional cricket clubs really succeed both on and off the field or does the pursuit of one always come at the expense of the other? And what does the civil war in Lancashire tell us about governance, the alignment of leadership and who sport is really for?
