Another Dan Sullivan of Alaska has apparently entered the U.S. Senate race to challenge the Republican incumbent of the same name.

Republicans say it’s a “trick” concocted by former U.S. Rep. Mary Peltola, a Democrat and primary challenger to U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan.

A Peltola spokesperson declined to comment officially on second Sullivan’s entry into the race.

An emailed statement to reporters said Dan Sullivan of Petersburg, southeast Alaska, who had a career in education and with the U.S. Forest Service, filed Friday to run for one of Alaska’s U.S. Senate seats.

“I know personally the challenges Alaskans face every day, and I know Dan from Ohio doesn’t get it – he was born at third base and thinks he hit a home run. It’s time for Alaska to elect a Sullivan who is on his side,” Petersburg’s Sullivan said in the emailed press release, referring to the state where the current senator was born and raised.

The challenger was not immediately available to respond to questions sent Friday.

There are several questions about the challenger’s campaign.

Alaska Division of Elections records showed Friday afternoon that Dan J. Sullivan, a Republican from Petersburg, was among a dozen U.S. Senate candidates who filed the necessary paperwork to appear on the Aug. 18 primary ballot.

However, Federal Election Commission records released Friday showed no evidence that a second Dan Sullivan had filed to enter the race.

The footer of Petersburg Sullivan’s emailed statement and a website say they are paid by “Sullivan for Alaska.”

But no such committee is registered with the Federal Election Commission.

Facebook and Instagram pages associated with the campaign say they were paid for by “Sullivan for Senate.”

A committee by that name was last active in 1996, according to FEC records.

Peltola was in St. Petersburg to meet with voters Tuesday.

A National Republican Senatorial Committee official said the effort was orchestrated in part by Peltola.

“Mary Peltola and Chuck Schumer know they can’t beat Sen. Sullivan on his record, so they are resorting to deceptive political maneuvering to try to fool Alaskans and buy a seat,” said Nick Puglia, regional press secretary for the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

When asked if Peltola’s campaign “was intended to ask, encourage or solicit” Petersburg Sullivan to run, Peltola campaign spokesman Harry Child said “no.”

The metadata for the press release about Petersburg Sullivan’s entry into the race indicated that it was written by someone named “Amber Lee.”

Amber Lee, a political strategist from Alaska, has worked for various campaigns in recent years and has supported Peltola in the past. When asked if she was involved in Petersburg Sullivan’s apparent entry into the Senate race, Lee responded in a text message that she was “not commenting.”

Nate Adams, a spokesman for Sullivan’s campaign, also declined to comment.

The statement for Sullivan’s second candidacy does not mention a party affiliation for Dan Sullivan of St. Petersburg.

Public records databases indicate that a Daniel J. Sullivan lives in St. Petersburg. Alaska voter records show a Daniel J. Sullivan with an undeclared party affiliation there. Dan Sullivan also served on the community’s Public Safety Advisory Board.

A 2013 Daily News article cited a Dan Sullivan, who taught fifth graders in St. Petersburg, in an article about the confusion among Alaskans that year, named Dan Sullivan.

At the time, there were two Dan Sullivans running for separate offices, the current former mayor of Anchorage and future senator Dan Sullivan, whose middle name is Scott.

Current records show nine Daniel Sullivans are registered to vote in Alaska.

If there are to be two Dan Sullivans in the same race on the ballot, state law has a plan for that.

Applicants’ initials will be listed.
