Boston (WHDH)-Health experts are worried about the potential increase in influenza cases during the coronavirus pandemic and are recommending people to be vaccinated.
The American Academy of Pediatrics requires all children over the age of six months to be vaccinated against the flu when the already mandated fall season in Massachusetts begins.
Early action can prevent the patient from becoming infected with both influenza and COVID-19.
“The concern at this point is that having two infections in the same person can cause serious lung injuries,” said pediatric infectious disease specialist Flor Munoz.
The flu season usually begins around the end of October, but infectious disease expert Joshua Barros of the Boston Medical Center says people should not wait for vaccination.
“Vaccines take about two weeks for an immune response, an antibody response, and that’s why we want to do it a little faster,” Barros said.
“The flu is likely to fight each other better, as the flu can exacerbate the symptoms of covid and vice versa,” he said.
The town of Hull encourages residents to get vaccinated early at this week’s Drive-up Influenza Clinic, which turned out to be a success. Another clinic is scheduled for next week due to popular demand.
The town manager said, “I just got a positive response and I felt how quickly and safely people were on the road.” “They didn’t have to get out of the car, some people brought their kids. It was really successful.”
