Southwest Utah reports a record 92 new cases and continues to surge in COVID-19
A health district in southwestern Utah reported 92 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Saturday. This is a new record for the day as the St. George region joined the state-wide surge at the beginning of the fall season.
Local health officials have reported 430 new cases in the last seven days, also a record high in the seven days since the pandemic began. Only recently in mid-September, less than 200 cases were counted per week in the area.
The Southwest District, which includes the counties of Washington, Iron, Kane, Beaver, and Garfield, currently counts a total of 424 hospitalizations and 45 new deaths. Washington County, home of the St. George region, reported a total of 4,034 cases and 38 deaths as of Thursday, accounting for the majority of the total.
Just as hospitals throughout Utah have warned that bed shortages may occur, the surge has just declared the state’s surge in cases as an “unsustainable” trend. Governor Gary Herbert.
State-wide health districts reported 1,340 new cases on Saturday, the day after reporting about 1,500 cases on Friday. The state also reported a record number of people actively hospitalized for the disease in 298 active cases.
More people have been tested to account for some of the increase in numbers, but the percentage of tests that have returned to positive has also increased — 14% of the tests over the last 7 days have been positive.

Since the pandemic began, there have been 540 people across the state and three new deaths have been reported.
Throughout the state, as of Saturday, 75% of all intensive care unit beds were full.
The University of Utah, which operates one of the state’s largest hospitals, announced on Friday that its intensive care unit was full and additional ICU beds were installed to accommodate the ongoing surge in patients.
Russell Binick, chief medical officer, said at a virtual press conference that doctors and nurses were working overtime to care for these patients as the hospital officially exceeded 100% of its normal capacity.
“We reduced it as much as possible, but it’s unstable,” he said. “We are very worried about the flu season, especially if people are not vaccinated. We can’t hit anymore.”
Herbert used the word “calm” to describe the state’s continued surge in new cases. This trend began shortly after the beginning of the new school year. Many Utah schools offer face-to-face classes.
This trend began in Utah County and other parts of northern Utah, but has now spread to other parts of the state, with most health districts reporting a rapid increase in October.
Doctors like Binick are also worried that the holiday season is approaching. During the holiday season, the temperature is cold and more people gather indoors, which could further expand the pandemic.
Herbert again encouraged people to wear masks and practice social distance.
Herbert hasn’t issued a state-wide mask mandate, but earlier this week announced a new plan that would automatically require a face cover in a high-transparency county. He warned on Friday that more regions could face new restrictions if case numbers were not controlled.
“This is essential to ensure that our healthcare system is not overwhelmed,” Herbert said in a statement.
Updated virus predictions have long feared COVID-19 cases as the United States recorded more than 69,000 new cases on Friday for the first time since July and health experts have warned of an increase in infections in the United States. The focus is on the “winter surge” that was being done. It means a lot of deaths soon.
The latest model update from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, released this week, includes good news spots. If the use of masks becomes almost universal, it can save the lives of 74,000 Americans.
However, influential models predict that the daily death toll in the United States will exceed 2,000 in January, even if the state imposes stricter orders.
