Hugo Carvajal: Spain supports US extradition request for Venezuela, ex-general

Former general has been under US sanctions since 2008
The Spanish government has approved an extradition request from the United States for the former Venezuelan intelligence chief, General Hugo Carvajal.
The United States accuses him of drug trafficking offenses.
Carvajal turned against the government of President Nicols Maduro in February 2019 and supported the Leader of the Opposition Juan Guaid as President of Venezuela.
He fled Venezuela on a boat and was arrested in Madrid in April 2019.
He then disappeared in November 2019 after a Spanish court decided that he should be extradited to the United States. Spanish police have not been able to find him since.

Carvajal – who denies the wrongdoing – has been under US sanctions since 2008 due to allegations that he helped the Colombian Farc rebel group and protected drug shipments to the United States.

Former Venezuelan intelligence chief released on Monday
Federal charges accusing him of coordinating a 5,600 kg (12,345 lb) shipment of cocaine from Venezuela to Mexico in 2006 became public in 2014.
The US Department of Justice said in April that if found guilty, he could be sentenced to 10 years in prison for life.
Washington also believes that Carvajal may share incriminating evidence regarding Mr. Maduro.
The former general was a close ally of the late Venezuelan socialist leader Hugo Chvez, but then denounced his successor, President Maduro. He was removed from his rank after choosing to support opposition leader Juan Guaid.
He fled Venezuela by boat to the Dominican Republic before going to Spain.
It was not the first time that he had faced extradition to the United States. In 2014, he was arrested for drug trafficking on the Dutch Caribbean island of Aruba. However, he was released after the refusal of the extradition request.
