US elections: US chief prosecutor orders “vote fraud” – BBC News

U.S. Attorney General William Barr has allowed prosecutors to probe alleged irregularities in the presidential election, and has urged the resignation of a senior Justice Department official. U.S. Attorney General William Barr issued a statement on Monday in which he wrote that since the end of the vote, “it is imperative that Americans have confidence,” that “the results accurately reflect the will of the electorate.” Barr wrote that federal prosecutors can investigate alleged irregularities in presidential elections, “if there are allegations of seemingly credible irregularities, if true, they can affect the outcome of federal elections in an individual state.” Barr said the prosecutor should only consider “significant allegations” of irregularities, and dismiss “specific, speculative, fanciful or remote claims.” The attorney general acknowledged that each state had the primary responsibility for holding the election, but the justice department said it was “responsible for ensuring that the federal election has full confidence in its electoral process.” however, critics have said that launching an investigation weakens the system, as there is no widespread misconduct.
