From Iceland – earthquakes linked to power plant activity

About ten earthquakes of magnitude 2 and above were detected in the Hengill region during the night. The largest earthquakes, which occurred around 7 pm, were 3.3. RUV Reports.

An announcement from ON Power states that the earthquakes occurred in an area where the geothermal water used in the Hellisheii Power Plant is being pumped to the ground. The earthquake was also felt in Hvragiri and the capital region.

Staff are constantly monitoring developments in the area, in consultation with the Met Office’s Seismological Bureau, and stated that the power plant operations were not affected by the earthquake. The power plant provides electricity and hot water for heating in the capital region.

The power plant has been producing power for the metropolitan area for nearly 30 years, and a large amount of water is regularly pumped into the ground from the geothermal system after being used in the station. This helps increase the sustainability of geothermal energy and reduces the environmental impact.

Changes in re-injection caused small seismic activity in the past, but no changes were made when activity occurred last night. ON Power scientists believe, however, that earthquakes are related to voltage changes caused by prolonged re-injection.

No changes will be made in light of earthquakes, as it is believed that changes in their arrangement are likely to increase the likelihood of seismic activity in the future.
