During the COVID-19 pandemic, influenza cases remain low in Michigan and other countries.
Of the 3,472 office visits in Michigan during the week ending December 19, a total of 22 patients with influenza-like illness (ILI) were reported. This is the state’s 0.6 ILI activity rate, up from 0.4% last week.
A year ago, on December 21, 2019, 2.6% of the 8,262 visits were 218.
By comparison, the number of outpatients nationwide is 1.5%, 0.1% less than last week and significantly less than 5.1% last year.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that seasonal influenza activity is lower than normal nationwide this year.
ILI is defined as fever (above 100 degrees) and cough and / or sore throat with unknown causes other than influenza.
Child deaths from influenza have not been confirmed by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services during the 2020-2021 influenza season. To date, one influenza-related childhood death has been reported nationwide.
