Studies reveal vascular damage in the brains of Covid patients, but no direct viral attack
A new study by researchers at the National Institutes of Health found features of damage caused by cerebrovascular thinning and leakage in tissue samples of patients who died shortly after being infected with Covid-19.
However, they show no signs of SARS-CoV-2 in tissue samples, suggesting that the damage was not caused by a direct viral attack on the brain.

Scans revealed that both areas were rich in bright spots called high signals, which often show inflammation, and dark spots called low intensity, which showed bleeding.
They found that bright spots contained smaller blood vessels than usual, and that blood proteins such as fibrinogen could leak into the brain. This seemed to provoke an immune response.
The spot was surrounded by T cells from the blood and the brain’s own immune cells called microglia. In contrast, dark spots contained both coagulated and leaky vessels, but no immune response.
“We were completely surprised. Initially, we expected to see damage caused by lack of oxygen. Instead, we saw multiple areas of injury usually associated with stroke and neuroinflammatory disease. “It was,” said Nath.

Finally, researchers showed no signs of infection in brain tissue samples, despite using several methods to detect genetic material or proteins from SARS-CoV-2.
