CO Health Authorities Respond to New Rapidly Spreading COVID-19 Strain Arrivals in Oregon

Bend, Oregon (KTVZ)-About a month ago, a rapidly spreading variant of the COVID-19 virus was discovered in the United Kingdom. It didn’t take long for the new mutations to reach the United States, and now Oregon.
Last weekend, staff on the University of Portland campus tested positive for a new strain of COVID-19 called B117. The employee had no travel history.
Dr. Jeff Absalon, the doctor in charge of the St. Charles Health System, said it wouldn’t be surprising if the virus mutated.
“It’s not surprising that this coronavirus has mutated,” Absalon said. “This is what the virus does and it changes over time.”
The new virus spreads clearly faster than the original strain, but it is not fatal and is not affected by the current COVID-19 vaccine. Absalon told NewsChannel 21 on Monday that people in Central Oregon should stay vigilant and do what they can to stop the spread.
“Anytime during a pandemic, the public should be as worried as they are now. I think this is a very serious pandemic. All to prevent the spread of this virus,” Absalon said. I ask people to play their part. ”
In addition to the rapid spread of new variants, according to the Oregon Department of Health, another major difference is that they appear to be tightly bound to respiratory cells.
Morgan Emerson, Head of Health Information at Deschutes County Health Service, said it was too early to determine if a new strain could invade Deschutes County, but there are still sources of concern.
“It’s too early to know exactly, but I’m worried about knowing it’s in Oregon, and we know it’s spreading more rapidly,” Emerson said.
Absalon added that although St. Charles has changed treatment plans many times throughout the pandemic, there are currently no plans to change the treatment of COVID-19 cases in the news of the new strain.
