14 months after the Albania earthquake, 680 families are still in tents – exit

14 months after the November 26 earthquake in Albania, around 680 families are still living in tents.

This came according to the Minister of Reconstruction, Arben Ahmedaj, during a press conference yesterday.

He said that 13,325 families receive rent allowances, 680 families still live in tents and there is no one in hotels.

More than 31,000 families have received grants to repair minor damage to their homes. Around 1,000 people have received grants for extensive damage to their property.

As of December 2020, Albania has received 289.5 million euros in grants from various donors and 150 million euros in loans from the government to finance the reconstruction.

Of the 160 schools damaged, only 25 have been completed while 69 are still in the construction phase. 35 schools were funded by the Albanian Development Fund, 19 by the Tirana municipality and 15 by the European Union.

600 individual homes have been rebuilt while another 1,600 are expected to be completed in the spring of 2021. 1,389 of them will be built by the Albanian Development Fund while 611 will be built by Tirana Municipality.
