Survivor accounts illustrate the devastation caused by the 1906 earthquake in Santa Rosa

This spring marks the 115th anniversary of the 1906 earthquake that devastated San Francisco and Santa Rosa.

It struck early in the morning on April 18, 1906, at 5:12 a.m., and many accounts of earthquake survivors began waking people from it.

Renowned botanist Luther Burbank lived a sleepless night before the earthquake, according to his 1911 report published in Sonoma Historical, the journal of the Sonoma County Historical Society.

He wrote, “I got up and pledged to get dressed, but I was thrown onto the bed and found it impossible to stand even by holding on to normally stable things, and receiving such vibration that I had never seen before.” “During the earthquake, there was a general noise from the fallen buildings that it was impossible to hear anything else. Even the loud screams were almost lost in this public sound.”

After the earthquake, Burbank headed to the devastated business department in downtown Santa Rosa, which he described as a “desperate mass of rubble” with piles of bricks, rubbish, gas leaks and fires.

A live report from America C. Chinn, to Glen Ellen, also printed in Historian Sonoma, said all surrounding chimneys collapsed.

Chen wrote, “Santa Rosa is a fourth street, a perfect ruin from one end to the other, all the hotels underneath all the churches and all the bricks underneath.”

A train of firefighters and volunteers from Petaluma arrived in Santa Rosa within 14 minutes after the earthquake. “Everyone says it was the fastest trip of their lives,” the Petaluma Argus-Courier newspaper reported.

In the weeks following the 7.9-magnitude earthquake, there were numerous local news reports of bodies being recovered from the rubble. At least 85 people were killed in Santa Rosa, where about 7,000 people lived at the time, according to the US Geological Survey.

Downtown Santa Rosa sits on the edge of the Cotate Basin, which is filled with “low-density, non-compressed sediments” more than one mile before the surface, according to the US Geological Survey scientists.
