All dealers should be back online by Thursday
Following a cyberattack, auto dealership software company CDK Global plans to restore services to all dealerships by Thursday, the company said in a statement Monday.
CDK provides more than 15,000 auto dealerships in North America with cloud-based software that manages vehicle acquisitions, sales, financing, insurance, repairs and maintenance. The restoration has been underway for more than a week after a June 19 cyberattack and ransom demand forced the company to shut down its systems.
“We are continuing our phased approach to the restoration process and are rapidly getting dealers up and running on the Dealer Management System (DMS). We anticipate all dealer connections will be up and running by the end of the day Wednesday, July 3 or early morning Thursday, July 4,” CDK spokeswoman Lisa Finney told USA TODAY in an emailed statement, adding that customer service channels have been restored for those experiencing issues.

Cybercriminal team BlackSuit allegedly behind cyberattack
Several media outlets have reportedRecorded Future ransomware analyst Allan Liska identified BlackSuit as the hacking group behind the cyberattack on CDK. Recorded Future did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday.
BlackSuit is a new cybercriminal team that emerged from a former Russian-linked hacking group called RoyalLocker,According to ReutersSecurity firm Recorded Future says the group has hacked at least 95 organizations around the world.
Cybercriminals target car dealerships
Cybercriminals pose a growing threat to auto dealerships: 17% of 175 dealerships surveyed experienced a cyberattack or incident in the past year, up from 15% the year before, according to a 2023 CDK report. Of those dealers, 46% said the cyberattack had a negative financial or operational impact.
Dealerships have become an attractive target because of the vast amounts of sensitive customer data they hold. From credit applications to customer financial information, dealerships hold a treasure trove of information for hackers, according to a 2023 paper from insurance company Zurich North America.
“In addition, dealership systems are often interconnected with external interfaces and portals, such as third-party service providers,” the report said, and many dealerships “lack basic cybersecurity protections.”
Dealers revert to pen and paper after CDK outage
Analysts say new car sales in June are likely to decline by more than 5% compared to June 2023, partly due to the impact of CDK's closure on dealership operations.
Thad Szott, whose family owns dealerships in Michigan, told the Detroit Free Press that the closure had a dramatic impact on his five dealerships.
Some of that work is now manual. But it's much more complicated to process simple things like repair orders or close an auto deal, he told the Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network.
Craig Schreiber, one of the owners of Northtown Automotive Companies in New York, told USA TODAY the company was able to go “old school” and use handwritten forms in its services after CDK's systems were shut down.
