Italian father of tiramisu dies aged 93 | Italy
An Italian restaurateur known as the father of tiramisu has died at the age of 93. Ado Campeol died on Saturday at his home in Treviso, Veneto.
Although the origins of the desserts are often disputed and the family never claimed copyright in the recipe, Campeol and his wife, Alba, the owners of the Alle Beccherie restaurant, are widely regarded as its inventors.
According to historians, the dish of egg yolks whipped with mascarpone cheese, layered on coffee-soaked cookies and topped with bitter cocoa powder was added to their restaurant’s menu in 1972.
Word tiramis, literally translated as lift me up, comes from the dialects of Treviso tireme su, and the dessert would have aphrodisiac effects.
Roberto Linguanotto, a chef who worked at Alle Beccherie and is described by many as the co-inventor of desserts, said the tiramisu was the result of an accident.
Campeols’ son Carlo, who now runs the restaurant, said: When Alba was breastfeeding me a few years earlier, she turned to mascarpone mixed with sugar and coffee soaked cookies to keep her energy up, this which is traditional in Treviso. Then, with her chef, she turned these items into a pudding.
