When Shah Rukh Khan predicted that audiences would lose interest in Bollywood films: ‘We should go for a larger than life cinema’
Shah Rukh Khan hasn’t starred in a movie since 2018’s Zero, which ended up being one of his biggest flops. But it was also the culmination of a new creative journey started more than 10 years ago for him, with the film Ra.A. The actor said in 2011 that he wanted to leave a mark on the film industry, so that when he is gone, future generations can look back and recognize his contributions beyond the roles he played.
And Shah Rukh had decided that the area where he wanted to change things the most was technology. To that end, he produced (and starred in) the superhero adventure Ra.One, and followed it up with similar VFX heavy films such as Fan and then Zero. None of them were hit. And in this interview with Preity Zinta in 2011, the actor predicted the kind of conversations that are happening now, as Bollywood is going through a particularly bad phase.
“The industry has given me a lot. I feel like at the end of my career, I want to leave a mark beyond playing a villain, romancing heroines, and dancing well. I did it for me. But I want people to look back and think of me when they think of special effects in Indian films. ‘Do you know this guy Shah Rukh, the world famous father of Aryan? It was him,” Shah Rukh said.
He continued, “I want to leave something in this industry that goes beyond movies, and takes our movies around the world. I can control the technology, that’s one of the reasons I created Ra.One. I’m friends with some of the greatest filmmakers, but they’re pretty dumb. They only want to make romantic films. But I want to move forward and lead the world. Let’s make the kind of movie that Indians in London, America and around the world will proudly tell their friends it was made in India, and it’s as good as Spider-Man.
Shah Rukh said if the industry doesn’t evolve, people will stop caring. “We should get into this larger than life cinema, because if we don’t, the younger generation will stop watching our films. They have access to international films. I think they should have access to our superheroes, we have such beautiful mythologies, such beautiful stories to tell…”
Shah Rukh said this before the age of streaming made international content even more easily accessible to the public, and cheap data ensured that people across the country were constantly online. Shah Rukh will next be seen in Pathaan. He will continue with Jawan, then Dunki. This year he played cameos in Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, Brahmastra and Laal Singh Chaddha.
