A sequel to “Cloverfield” is reportedly in the works.
The original film – which starred Lizzy Caplan, Jessica Lucas and TJ Miller – was released in 2008, and JJ Abrams is now reportedly working on a new film in the franchise.
Paramount Pictures turned to Joe Barton to write the script, according to The Hollywood Reporter, who explains that the new film will not be in found footage format – unlike the original.
Abrams returns to produce the project, but Matt Reeves – who directed the blockbuster film over a decade ago – is not involved in the new film.
Reeves, 54, gained widespread attention for directing the original monster movie and is now one of the most in-demand filmmakers in the business.
The director has previously explained that he is determined to make a unique film while working on “Cloverfield”.
He explained, “When you’ve been doing things professionally for so many years, the idea that you can take something and do it differently is exciting, it’s a challenge and it’s fun and refreshing. The idea of doing something so different is exhilarating.
“We hope this created a different cinematic experience.”
The original film was followed by “ 10 Cloverfield Lane ” and “ The Cloverfield Paradox ” in 2016 in 2018.
But Reeves previously acknowledged that making a sequel would be a major challenge.
He said: “The problem with a sequel is I think we all feel really protective of that experience. The key here will be if we can find something that’s compelling enough and that’s different enough to that we can do, then it will probably be worth it.
“Obviously it also depends on how it’s going in the world and all of those things too, but really, for us creatively, we just want to find something that would be another challenge.”
