Mayor Mamdani visits Venezuela earthquake relief site in Brooklyn, renews call to redefine Venezuela’s temporary protected status

NEW YORK – Mayor Zahran Kwame Mamdani today visited Lola Restaurant in Brooklyn, where he joined Venezuelan New Yorkers, community members, Mayor’s Office of International Affairs Commissioner Ana Maria Archila and Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs Commissioner Faiza N. Ali and volunteers pack food, medicine and other vital supplies for families affected by devastating earthquakes in Venezuela. The restaurant became one of the area’s largest donation centers for earthquake relief.

“In moments like these, it is ordinary people who show us what solidarity looks like,” said Mayor Zahran Mamdani. “And this is exactly what is happening in Lula’s house.” “New Yorkers are stepping up to care for people they have never met because they understand that our humanity does not end at our borders. As families in Venezuela grieve an unimaginable loss, we will stand with Venezuelan New Yorkers here at home. We will continue to demand that the federal government redefine Venezuela’s TPS and restore humanitarian protections for those living in the United States. After two major earthquakes and years of political instability, no honest person can argue that Venezuela is safe to return to.”

On June 24, two powerful earthquakes struck northern Venezuela near the west coast of Caracas. More than 2,000 people have died, and the United Nations estimates that up to 50,000 are still missing. The disaster struck a country already reeling from years of economic and political crisis, overwhelming hospitals and emergency services.

“New York City is home to a growing Venezuelan community,” said International Affairs Commissioner Ana María Archila. “For thousands of families across the five boroughs, this is not a distant tragedy – it is deeply personal. Within hours of the earthquakes, Venezuelan New Yorkers organized.” “Restaurants, businesses and volunteers have converted more than 20 locations throughout the tri-state area into donation centers. Evo Diaz has turned the Lula site into one of the first and largest fundraising sites. Our administration is identifying ways the city can support community-led relief efforts while sharing our expertise as Venezuela transitions emergency response to the long work of recovery and rebuilding.”

The federal government has moved to end TPS for Venezuelans, ending protections that were set to remain in effect until October 2026. Although a federal appeals court found that decision illegal, hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans have already lost their protected status while litigation continues, and remaining TPS is set to expire later this year.

“For thousands of Venezuelan New Yorkers who call our city home, this tragedy is not far away,” said Migrant Affairs Commissioner Faiza Ali. “They are anxiously trying to reach their loved ones while finding every way possible to deliver life-saving resources to families recovering from these devastating earthquakes.” “Today’s visit to Lula reflects the best of New York City: our compassion, our resilience, and our commitment to one another. We will continue to work alongside community leaders to support relief efforts across our city. This disaster has exacerbated an already dire humanitarian crisis. We urge the federal government to use every humanitarian tool available, including allowing deferred forced departures or redeterminations of temporary protected status from Venezuela, so that Venezuelan families can remain safely in the United States while continuing to support their loved ones here.” outside.”

New Yorkers who want to help can volunteer at Lulla’s, 169 Graham Ave. In Brooklyn.

Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
