Michele, ex-Gucci star, named creative director of Valentino
Rome (AFP) Italian luxury fashion brand Valentino on Thursday named former Gucci top executive Alessandro Michele as its new creative director.

Speculation was rife about where the 51-year-old designer would go after his November 2022 departure from Gucci, where he oversaw a period of strong growth.
Last week, Valentino announced the end of its 25-year collaboration with creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli and announced on Monday that it would cancel its upcoming Men's and Haute Couture fashion shows scheduled for June.
Valentino, controlled by the Qatari investment fund Mayhoola For Investments, was founded in Rome in 1960 by designer Valentino Garavani and his business and life partner Giancarlo Giammetti.
Last year, French luxury group Kering paid 1.7 billion euros for a 30 percent stake, with an option to acquire the entire stake.
“Michele is an exceptional talent and her appointment underlines our great ambitions for the House of Valentino,” said Rachid Mohamed Rachid, president of Valentino, in a statement.
François-Henri Pinault, chairman and CEO of Kering, said he looked forward to Michele's “passion, imagination and dedication at play in this new chapter for Valentino.”
At Gucci, Kering's flagship brand, Michele ushered in a colorful, bohemian 1970s aesthetic to the brand with her world-famous striped logo in green and red.
A Hollywood darling, he has dressed pop and movie stars like Harry Styles and Jared Leto while attracting new fans to the fashion house through collaborations with major brands like Adidas, Disney and X Box.
Revenues nearly tripled under his leadership, but sales faltered in his final seasons. Gucci is still struggling, with sales falling 6% to 9.9 billion euros in 2023.
