Paris 2024: Exclusion of men from artistic swimming raises questions about “parity Olympics”

Four-time world gold medallist Giorgio Minisini has announced his retirement after no men were selected to compete in Paris 2024 synchronized swimming out of 96 athletes.

Neither World Aquatics nor the International Olympic Committee have any say in the choices, as they are always decided by individual national federations.

With no men selected for Paris, four-time world gold medallist Giorgio Minisini said he would compete for the last time at the age of 28.

Obsession is a young man's game, Minisini, who was cut from Italy's Olympic team in April, wrote on his Instagram account Tuesday.

Minisini and American Bill May were the two Olympic pioneers most likely to be selected for Paris as the first men to compete in artistic swimming.

The sport made its debut at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics under the name synchronized swimming.

Minisini specializes in the mixed duet event, which is not yet on the Olympic program, and missed selection for the team event.

May was part of the U.S. team that won silver and bronze medals in team acrobatics at the last two world championships. At 45, he was left out of the Olympics last month.
