For the first time, New York schools will have a universal dress code – NBC New York
For the first time, all New York City public school students will be required to adhere to a universal school dress code.
The New York City Council on Thursday approved a bill requiring public school dress codes to comply with Title IV, the federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on sex.
According to City Councilwoman Althea Stevens, who sponsored the legislation, the goal of the new dress code policy is to eliminate what she calls “sexist and heteronormative dress codes,” as well as “standards that target girls and students of color.”
The law also says schools must accommodate students' “cultural diversity, gender expression and body diversity,” Stevens said. Dress codes must be gender neutral, the bill says.
“It’s not new. When I was in high school, I remember reintroducing the dress code and it restricted young women more than anyone else, and there are so many cultures that we have to integrate them into an education system,” Stevens said.
Before Thursday's vote, dress codes were left to the discretion of city schools. The Department of Education will work with the City Council to develop new guidelines for student dress codes.
